El Gordo de la Primitiva is the Spanish National weekly lottery. The name translates literally as ‘the fat one of the primitive’ but it is commonly referred to as simply El Gordo.

The El Gordo lottery is run by Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, which is the official and exclusive issuer of lottery licenses in Spain. They like to play lottery in Spain but the government also likes to keep an eye on how things are executed and operated – therefore a governing body was instilled, to monitor and manage El Gordo and other lotteries and settle any disputes that may arise.
El Gordo weekly draws take place every Sunday at 13.00 local time and to play you select 5 numbers from a pool of main balls numbered from 1 to 54. There is also a second set of El Gordo lottery numbers which range from 0 to 9 and these are referred to as “Key Numbers”. In order to win El Gordo, a player must correctly match the 5 main numbers drawn and of course the key number. El Gordo jackpots have reached a total of over 22 million euros so the ‘Fat One’ is definitely worth playing for.
It is worth noting that there are of course additional El Gordo prizes up for grabs. The values of these are generated based on the sales volume of El Gordo tickets in the week leading up to the draw. Each line of 6 numbers entered into the draw has around 1 in 19 chance of winning an El Gordo prize.
